With a third order we're calling Chronological Order With TV Shows and One-Shots, we're tossing in as many possible MCU-related TV shows and short films as we can, because it's fun, even though the earliest Marvel TV shows are tangentially affiliated at best. These days, you can't watch the movies without watching the shows! (The film Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness makes much more sense if you watched WandaVision first, we promise.)
Themovie is not about ghosts but about madness and the energies it sets loose inan isolated situation primed to magnify them. Jack is an alcoholic and childabuser who has reportedly not had a drink for five months but is anything but a"recovering alcoholic." When he imagines he drinks with the imaginarybartender, he is as drunk as if he were really drinking, and the imaginarybooze triggers all his alcoholic demons, including an erotic vision that turnsinto a nightmare. We believe Hallorann when he senses Danny has psychic powers,but it's clear Danny is not their master; as he picks up his father's madnessand the story of the murdered girls, he conflates it into his fears of anotherattack by Jack. Wendy, who is terrified by her enraged husband, perhaps alsoreceives versions of this psychic output. They all lose reality together. Yes, thereare events we believe: Jack's manuscript, Jack locked in the food storage room,Jack escaping, and the famous "Here's Johnny!" as he hatchets his waythrough the door. But there is no way, within the film, to be sure with anyconfidence exactly what happens, or precisely how, or really why.
Director Sam Raimi's signature love of adventure and the macabre makes this Marvel sequel darker, more twisted, and more exciting than many other MCU movies. Fresh off of his scene-stealing supporting role in Spider-Man: No Way Home, Doctor Strange here faces one of the MCU's most formidable and powerful beings -- and teams with one of its most intriguing characters. America Chavez is fascinating, but while she has a lot of screen time in The Multiverse of Madness, her backstory is less important than the urgent fact that she's being hunted across the multiverse. Gomez is a charming and expressive young actor, and her time with Strange brings out his softer, less brusque/arrogant side. She's one of three women characters in the film whose performances elevate the movie beyond the original. McAdams is sort of the opposite of most of the MCU women, who start out as friends, rivals, or colleagues and end up as lovers. Christine is the one who got away. She returns here in two incarnations, and she's just the no-nonsense, truth-telling partner Doctor Strange needs in the titular madness of the multiverse.
At long last, a sequel to Doctor Strange is officially on the way with the recently announced Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. While not much, specifically, has been revealed since the project was announced at San Diego Comic-Con as part of Marvel Studios' Phase 4 reveal, there are a few things we know. Stephen Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) will be teaming up with Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen), this is being billed as the first horror movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Nightmare is going to be introduced as a new villain. But will he be the only villain? Or can we expect to see another appearance from an old foe? Specifically, Dormammu.
C. Robert Cargill also previously stated that Marvel has intentions to give Mordo a proper arc, sort of in the way that Loki had a throughline that ran through several movies. Tying him to Dormammu would be a way to give two of the Sorcerer Supreme's greatest enemies their day in court. Again, much of this is speculative but one thing I can say with a relative degree of confidence; we haven't seen the last of Dormammu. Marvel will unleash Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness in theaters on May 7, 2021.

Acuna: When I previewed the first 20 minutes of this movie originally on April 28, I was really excited by the introduction of Xochitl Gomez's young hero. She was speaking Spanish for most of her entry into the film and it really seemed like she was going to be a main character.
